Professor of Solid Waste Management
Prof. Komilis is an environmental scientist who gained his Ph.D. degree (1999) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA).
Since 2005, he is a faculty member at the Dept. of Environmental Engineering of the Democritus University of Thrace in Xanthi (Greece).
Since 2018, he has been the head of the Laboratory of Solid and Hazardous waste management and a full Professor. He is teaching courses related to Solid Waste Management and Applied Statistics. His research interests focus on all aspects of municipal solid waste management, compost stability indices, organic waste valorization, LCA and lately on bioplastics and textile wastes. He has so far co-authored 105 articles in peer-reviewed journals (h index: 34) and has received scholarships from various institutes over the past 30 years (Fulbright, N.A.T.O., DAAD, Marie Sklodowska-Curie, Erasmus+).
From 2014 to 2016, he worked as an expert researcher at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain).
From 2013-2020, he served as an Associate Editor of the Waste Management journal (Elsevier) and since 2020, he is a co-Editor in Chief in that same journal.
